What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage isn’t just Swedish with straws that are hard to pressure. Deep tissue massage is firm pressure and slow strokes to massage deep layers of muscle and fascia, the connective tissue surrounding your muscles.

The common technique used in deep tissue massage therapy includes stripping, which is deep pressure that glides along the length of your muscle fibers, and friction, which applies pressure across the grain of your muscles to break up adhesions and align tissue fibers.

Therapeutic massage is a general term that describes any type of massage modalities that helps relieve pain, reduce stress, and work on a specific problem such as a frozen shoulder. People always assume deep tissue massage means therapeutic massage, And they will get very strong pressure during a massage. But this is not always the case. Deep tissue massage is great for breaking down scar tissue and getting your blood circulation going, but it may not be what you need on a particular day. But a good therapist may apply the specific techniques and the right amount of pressure to address your need and sometimes that’s a very light touch.
